Packaging systems are in focus at the course Packaging Logistics (MTTN35). The course gives students knowledge and skills in analysing, evaluating, designing and selecting a packaging system based on the needs and requirements of the various companies and organizations in a supply chain.

The course provides a scientific perspective on the complexity of choosing packaging systems that fulfil the logistical, environmental and commercial requirements of all stakeholders in a supply chain – from producers to consumers. Students learn to apply research-based tools and frameworks to analyse and prioritise among these requirements in a structured way.

Through project-based learning, groups of students work together and continuously apply the course content to a real-world setting. Approximately half of the time of the course is spent on project work.

The course activities are divided into three blocks, where each block is linked to a part of the project in terms of supporting lectures and activities such as field trips and case studies. Each block ends with a feedback seminar where a part of the project is presented and discussed.

Lectures related to packaging logistics theory, concepts, models, sustainability, innovation and traceability are conducted by teachers from the division of packaging logistics. To highlight real-world examples, the course has 8-10 guest lecturers by experts at leading companies in the field, such as Tetra Pak, Svenska Retursystem, Schoeller Allibert, IKEA, DHL and Ericsson.
